Ministry’s Lawyer Objects to Reduced Sentence for Defendant Who Seriously Injured Wife
A Turkish man who stabbed his wife during their divorce process has had his sentence reduced and been released from prison on the condition of a travel ban. Ali Karadeniz was convicted of attempting to deliberately kill his wife in a public and violent incident. The initial sentence of 15 years was reduced to 11 years and 3 months after the application of the ‘unfair provocation’ discount. However, following another appeal, the Supreme Court found his punishment to be excessive and ordered him to be released on the condition of a travel ban.
The incident, which occurred in September 2019 in the Cengiz Topel District of Kocasinan district, sparked outrage and legal proceedings. Ali Karadeniz, who initially escaped but was later caught by the police and arrested, has now been involved in a lengthy legal battle to determine his punishment.
After the Supreme Court’s decision, Ali Karadeniz appeared in court again and was eventually sentenced to 7.5 years in prison after the application of a ‘good conduct’ reduction. This was in light of the fact that his action was deemed to remain at the attempted stage. Consideration was given to the time he had already spent in prison, and the committee ruled for his release on the condition of a travel ban.
However, the decision has sparked further controversy, with lawyers from the Ministry of Family and Social Services objecting to the ruling and taking the file to the Supreme Court once again. It will be up to the Supreme Court to determine whether Ali Karadeniz’s punishment was reasonable considering the circumstances of the case.
