Africa’s Richest Businessman’s Oil Refinery Receives First Crude Oil Cargo
Aliko Dangote, the richest businessman in Africa, has made history with the launch of Africa’s largest oil refinery located in Nigeria’s commercial city Lagos. The $19 billion single-line refinery received its first crude oil cargo of 1 million barrels from Shell, marking an important milestone for the project.
The President of Dangote Group Company, Aliko Dangote, expressed his delight at the arrival of the first shipment, stating that it is the first of the 6 million barrel cargo that will ensure the initial operation of the refinery. He emphasized the significance of this achievement for the country, showcasing Nigeria’s ability to develop and deliver major capital projects. Dangote also shared his excitement for the next milestone, which will be delivering the first batch of products to the Nigerian market.
The refinery, which was launched in 2017 and officially opened in June 2023, is located in the Lekki region of Lagos state, off the Atlantic Ocean. It is expected to process 350 thousand barrels of crude oil per day and when operating at full capacity, it will be able to meet 100 percent of Nigeria’s refined product needs, as well as provide products for export.
Nigeria, being Africa’s largest oil producer, currently imports most of its fuel due to the insufficient number of refineries. However, with the new refinery, the government hopes to transform the country from a refined fuel importer to an exporter and provide employment for tens of thousands of people.
The successful operation of the Dangote Oil Refinery not only represents a major achievement for Nigeria but also demonstrates the potential for significant industrial and economic growth for the entire continent of Africa.
