Over 2.5 Million Visitors at Göbeklitepe Since Opening
Göbeklitepe, the ancient site in Turkey that has captured the attention of the world with its historical significance and remarkable findings, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018. The site, known for having the world’s oldest temple ruins and a 65-centimeter human statue dating back approximately 12 thousand years, has become a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
Following the official opening of Göbeklitepe on March 8, 2019, with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the site has seen a significant increase in visitors. President Erdoğan even declared 2019 as the “Year of Göbeklitepe,” further highlighting the importance of this archaeological site.
With over 2 million 500 thousand visitors since its opening, Göbeklitepe has become a key attraction for those interested in history and archaeology. The site’s Head and Şanlıurfa Museum Director, Celal Uludağ, emphasized the significance of the findings uncovered during excavations, stating that they have important implications for world archaeology.
Uludağ also mentioned the discovery of a painted pig statue, believed to be the world’s oldest in real size, found in 2023. This statue is now on display at the Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum, adding to the rich collection of artifacts found at Göbeklitepe.
As excavations continue at the site as part of the Taştepeler project, it is expected that more groundbreaking discoveries will be made in the coming years. Göbeklitepe remains a focal point for those interested in ancient history, and its significance continues to grow with each new find. Visitors are awe-inspired by the monumental architecture and intricate carvings found at the site, solidifying Göbeklitepe as a vital center that has changed the course of history.
