Reopening of Kara-Suu Border Crossing between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan After 14 Years

After 14 Years, Kara-Suu Border Customs Post Reopens

The Kara-Suu border customs post, located in the Andijan region near the border with Kyrgyzstan, has officially reopened after a 14-year hiatus. A ceremony was held on September 12 to mark the reopening of the border customs post in the Kurgontepa district of Andijan region.

The Customs Committee confirmed that the border crossing was closed 14 years ago but has now been reopened thanks to an agreement between the leaders of both countries. The Kara-Suu border customs post covers an area of over 3 hectares and has the capacity to process more than 12,000 people per day. Travelers will primarily pass through enclosed structures at the post, ensuring a smooth and efficient crossing.

Previously, travelers had to cover a distance of 120 kilometers from the Osh region to the Jalal-Abad region in Kyrgyzstan. With the reopening of the Kara-Suu border customs post, the distance has been shortened to 101 kilometers, with only 19 kilometers of transit through Uzbekistan territory.

On the same day, the “Uchkorgon” checkpoint in Namangan region was also opened. Additionally, starting from September 1, 2023, citizens of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan will be able to cross the border between the two countries using just an ID card, streamlining the process for travelers.

The reopening of the Kara-Suu border customs post marks an important development in enhancing trade and travel between Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. With the improved infrastructure and streamlined processes, travelers can look forward to more convenient and efficient border crossings in the future.
