Robotic Surgery used to Perform Lung Transplant in Spain’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital
Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain has made world history by carrying out a successful lung transplant surgery entirely by robot. Led by Albert Jauregui, head of the hospital’s pulmonary diseases department, the revolutionary operation was completed in just five hours in February.
Jauregui indicated that until now, such a surgery with minimal incision and robotic surgery had only been performed at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He added that the surgery technique used at Vall d’Hebron is a pioneer on an international scale, and it signified progress in the advancement of this field.
According to Jauregui, the traditional lung transplant surgery is quite complex as it requires a large incision in the thorax and breaking ribs to get to the organs. With the new technique, a small incision can be made under the breast without damaging the ribs, which reduces complications like postoperative intensive care, hospital stay, and pain. Moreover, respiratory rehabilitation can progress at a faster pace.
After the surgery, a 65-year-old male patient named Xavier praised the result and said he hadn’t felt any pain during his postoperative recovery. He expressed his appreciation to the donor’s family and the doctors involved in his treatment.
The successful surgery by Vall d’Hebron Hospital holds great potential for future treatments, demonstrating the benefits of minimally invasive procedures and robotic technology in medical practice.
