Russia’s recent attack on Ukraine results in casualties
The city of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine experienced a devastating missile attack by Russian forces, targeting social and civilian infrastructure. The deputy mayor confirmed that at least 17 people lost their lives, with 60 individuals sustaining injuries during the onslaught.
Situated on the border with Belarus, Chernihiv had been occupied at the onset of the conflict but had remained relatively peaceful for nearly two years after Russia withdrew its troops. Shockingly, the peaceful interval was shattered as missiles rained down on the city recently.
Following the attack, regional Governor Vyacheslav Chaus took to social media to report on the tragic events, stating, “The enemy launched three missile attacks almost into the center of the city. There are civilians dead and many injured. Rescue teams are currently working tirelessly to aid those affected.”
Chernihiv, located approximately 145 kilometers north of the capital Kiev, has a pre-war population of around 285 thousand inhabitants. The city, which once thrived with residents going about their daily lives, now finds itself grappling with the aftermath of destruction.
In light of escalating hostilities, Ukraine is urging its international allies to provide advanced air defense systems to help safeguard key infrastructure from further attacks by Russian forces. The call for assistance underscores the urgent need to protect civilian lives and critical societal structures from the ongoing conflict.
