Sapienza University of Rome Students Join Tent Support for Palestine
Students at Sapienza University in Rome joined the global “tents” protests to show their solidarity with Palestine and condemn Israel’s bombardments in Gaza. Around 30 tents were set up in the green area near the university’s rectorate, adorned with Palestinian flags and banners calling for an end to the genocide in Palestine.
The protest also honored Dr. Gaza Islamic University Rector, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Students expressed their outrage over the destruction of a memorial plaque bearing the name of physicist Sufyan Tayeh by a group of individuals.
Elettra, a History Department student, highlighted the ongoing efforts to urge the university to end its cooperation with Israel, emphasizing their commitment to supporting the Palestinian people’s resistance. Similarly, Federico from the Faculty of Law emphasized the need for universities and the government to sever ties with Israel, given the continued weapons trade and academic relations.
Geology Department student Ludovica emphasized the importance of Rector Antonella Polimeni’s support in condemning the vandalism at the Physics Department entrance. The protest at Sapienza University mirrored similar actions at universities in Bologna and Naples, with students calling for an end to complicity in the oppression of Palestine.
The students’ collective actions reflect a growing momentum in academia to stand against injustice and show solidarity with global movements for peace and justice. As the protests continue, the voices of the students at Sapienza University and beyond echo a resounding call for change and accountability.
