Short Films from Northern Cyprus Achieving International Recognition Despite Lack of Funding
The Mediterranean European Art Association (EMAA) recently hosted a short film screening and panel, highlighting the success of short films created in the northern part of Cyprus despite a lack of funding in the art and cinema sectors.
EMAA screened three films, “Ordinary Essays”, “Kismet” and “Delivery” directed by Vasvi Çiftçioğlu and Doğuş Özokutan, with the music composed by İnal Bilsel at EMAA Bahçe. A panel moderated by Münevver Özakalın was also held, where Vasfi Çiftçioğlu, Doğuş Özokutan and İnal Bilsel discussed the topics covered in the films, their production processes and short film production in Cyprus.
The event highlighted the challenges faced by local artists and filmmakers due to the lack of funds in the northern part of Cyprus, but also noted that short films from the region such as “Ordinary Essays”, “Kismet” and “Delivery” have won numerous awards at international festivals.
Despite the hardships, the event brought together leading names in the cinema and art world. It showcased the potential of the artistic talent in the northern part of Cyprus and the need for greater support to nurture this potential.
