Senegal Presidential Elections Set for March 24 – Breaking News
After much discussion and decision-making, it has been officially announced that the presidential election in the country will be held on March 24. This news comes after Prime Minister Amadou Ba, who was also a presidential candidate, stepped down from his position to focus on his campaign activities. Interior Minister Sidiki Kaba has been appointed as the new Prime Minister in place of Ba.
Initially, a date of June 2 was proposed after the National Dialogue meetings, but this was later rejected by the Constitutional Council. The Constitutional Council ultimately decided that the presidential election would take place on March 31. However, after conflicting announcements from the Council of Ministers and the Constitutional Council, it has been confirmed by government sources that the election will indeed be on March 24.
This latest announcement comes just three weeks before the scheduled election date, following President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone the originally planned election on February 25. This move was met with criticism and accusations of an “institutional and constitutional coup”. In response, President Sall promised to engage in a national dialogue in order to address tensions and concerns.
After extensive discussions during the national dialogue meetings, it was agreed that the new election date would be June 2. Despite this agreement, the opposition and civil society expressed strong opposition to the June 2 date and advocated for the elections to be held before April 2. The upcoming presidential election promises to be a crucial and highly anticipated event for the nation.
