The Syrian Air Force Responds to Attack Near Damascus
The Syrian air force has announced that it responded to an attack near the capital Damascus today. According to the official news agency SANA, the air defense systems countered “hostile targets around Damascus”. While the source of the attack was not specified, a military source stated to SANA that “two unmanned aerial vehicles coming from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan violated Syrian airspace. Our air defense forces responded and shot them down in the west of Damascus.”
Israel, which has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syria since the civil war began in 2011, has increased its campaign against Iran-backed forces in Syria since the start of the war with Hamas in Gaza on October 7. Despite rarely commenting on individual attacks in Syria, Israel insists it will not allow Iran to expand its presence.
The situation in the region remains tense, with ongoing conflicts and power struggles between various factions. The response from the Syrian air force highlights the continued volatility in the area and the ongoing tensions between neighboring countries.
