Rubber Boat Carrying Immigrants Sinks Off the Coast of Çanakkale, 21 Dead
A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Çanakkale’s Eceabat district when a rubber boat carrying immigrants sank. The number of deaths in this incident has risen to 21 people, including 5 children.
Çanakkale Governor İlhami Aktaş, in a statement, mentioned that as soon as they received the notice, all necessary elements were dispatched to the region. Helicopters, planes, Coast Guard teams, and other institutions swiftly responded to the emergency. Thankfully, 2 individuals were saved by their own means while Coast Guard teams managed to rescue 2 more individuals. These survivors were transported to a nearby hospital for medical assistance.
According to a written statement from the Çanakkale Governorship, search and rescue operations are still ongoing with a total of 18 boats and 502 personnel, including planes, helicopters, UAVs, and various boats from the Coast Guard Command and other institutions.
Furthermore, the bodies of 11 out of the 21 deceased immigrants were brought to Kabatepe Port by the Health Sanitary Boat. The remaining bodies have been sent to morgues in the city center for further examination.
Search and rescue efforts are being carried out by 10 Coast Guard boats, 2 helicopters, maritime police, UMKE, and AFAD teams both at sea and onshore. Multiple ambulances and teams remain on standby at Kabatepe Port to assist with any further developments in this tragic incident.
