Turkey Elected as Member of UNESCO World Heritage Committee
In a recent announcement on his social media account, Minister Ersoy shared the exciting news that Turkey has been elected as a member of the World Heritage Committee. This means that Turkey will have a voice in the decision-making process regarding the candidates for the world heritage list for the next 4 years.
During its membership, Turkey will be able to participate in meetings of the World Heritage Committee, which is the executive body of the World Heritage Convention. The committee meets once a year and is responsible for making decisions related to the world heritage list, as well as working to preserve cultural and natural assets with universal values.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement, revealing that Turkey received the highest number of votes in the open seat category during the elections held at the 24th session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention on the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. This election grants Turkey membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee.
This isn’t the first time Turkey has served on the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The country previously held membership in the committee during the periods of 1983-1989 and 2013-2017. In its new role as a member, Turkey aims to bring its experience and knowledge in the management and protection of 21 world heritage sites, representing all civilizations that have existed in Anatolia since the Neolithic period, to the international stage.
This latest achievement is a testament to Turkey’s commitment to preserving cultural and natural heritage and its recognition of the importance of protecting these valuable assets for future generations.
