Turkmen Chess Players Shine at U20 World Championship in Montenegro Orient

The World Chess Championship among players under 20 recently took place in Petrovac, Montenegro from February 25 to March 8. Turkmenistan was well represented at the tournament, with three boys and three girls showcasing their skills on the international stage.

Over 255 of the world’s top young chess players from more than 60 countries competed in the tournament, which was played over 11 rounds using the Swiss system in both open and girls’ categories. The Turkmenistan team showed great determination and sportsmanship throughout the event.

In the men’s category, Amanmuhammet Khommadov, Vepaly Khalyniyazov, and Serdar Bayramov represented Turkmenistan. The Indian grandmaster Venkatesh Pranav emerged as the winner in this category, claiming the world champion title.

For the women’s category, Turkmenistan was represented by Lala and Leyla Shokhradova, as well as Gulmira Seyilkhanova. While the Russian player Anna Shukhman took home the world champion title in this group.

Despite the tough competition, five out of six Turkmen chess players managed to improve their FIDE ratings. This experience will be invaluable for their future participation in upcoming international tournaments.

Looking ahead, the Turkmen players are gearing up for the Central Asian Zonal Championship in Kazakhstan, the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Greece, the Moscow State University Cup, and other prestigious competitions. The coaching staff is dedicated to assisting the players in their preparation and aiming for success in these upcoming events.
