UN Aid to Gaza Insufficient to Combat Famine

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has issued a warning about the dire situation in Gaza, where humanitarian aid is being blocked by Israel. In a recent message shared on social media, UNRWA highlighted the lack of access to essential supplies in Gaza, exacerbating the already dire conditions in the region.
According to UNRWA, most of the trucks delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza are being denied entry by Israel. In March alone, an average of only 159 aid trucks per day have been allowed into the Gaza Strip, falling far short of the region’s urgent needs. Additionally, only 8 out of 24 health centers in Gaza are currently operational, further underscoring the critical humanitarian crisis in the area.
Despite efforts by many countries to send humanitarian aid through Egyptian territory, Israel’s obstacles have prevented much of this aid from reaching Gaza. International calls to allow aid deliveries through the Rafah border gate on the Egyptian border have been ignored by Israel, further exacerbating the suffering of the people in Gaza.
The Tel Aviv administration has also disregarded the interim measure decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the passage of humanitarian aid to Gaza. This decision was made in the context of a genocide case filed against Israel by South Africa.
European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has spoken out about the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. In a post on social media, she emphasized that at least 500 trucks or the equivalent in aid should be allowed into Gaza daily to address the crisis.
The ongoing blockade on humanitarian aid to Gaza is contributing to the worsening situation in the region, which is already facing occupation, attacks, and widespread hunger. International pressure continues to mount on Israel to lift these obstacles and ensure that essential supplies can reach those in need in Gaza.
