UN Mission Evaluates Readiness for Landlocked Countries Conference in the East
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan recently hosted a briefing to discuss the results of the first UN assessment mission in preparation for LLDC-3. The mission was led by UN Under-Secretary-General, Rabab Fatima, and focused on the upcoming Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC-3), set to take place in Turkmenistan in August.
During the briefing, Rabab Fatima emphasized the importance of the event, which occurs every ten years, and highlighted the need for coordinated efforts in preparation for LLDC-3. Attendees included representatives from relevant ministries, UN agencies, and local media.
The discussions at the briefing focused on the timely implementation of preparatory measures for the conference, including the drafting of documents, organizing information support, and ensuring the technical readiness of the conference venues. The event also addressed the challenges faced by landlocked countries in terms of transit and transport, which account for a significant portion of their GDP due to geographical limitations.
In order to enhance transport links between landlocked countries, efforts are needed to address infrastructure challenges and improve regulatory procedures. Central Asia has made progress in creating transit corridors and acting as logistics hubs, but further improvements are necessary to facilitate profitable transit for landlocked nations.
Ratifying and implementing international conventions, such as the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, and investing in digitalization of the transport sector are essential steps in promoting efficient transit for landlocked countries. Overall, the briefing underscored the importance of collaboration and coordination in preparing for LLDC-3 and addressing the unique challenges faced by landlocked developing countries.
