UN warns Gaza of heightened danger from unexploded bombs
The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the dangerous situation in Gaza, which has been heavily targeted by Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. In a statement released by the UN Geneva Office, Birch, who is participating in the “27th International Mine Action National Directors and UN Advisors Meeting” in Geneva, emphasized the urgent need to address the risk posed by unexploded bombs in Gaza.
Birch expressed concerns that Gaza is currently at its “most dangerous stage” due to the presence of large quantities of unexploded ordnance. He highlighted the risk of accidents increasing as people begin to return to the northern part of Gaza, where the bombs are scattered. Birch stressed the importance of providing adequate risk education to the population before allowing them to return to their homes.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Deputy UN Secretary-General for Peace Operations, reaffirmed the UN’s support for UNMAS (United Nations Mine Action Service) in conducting humanitarian efforts and risk assessments in Gaza. Lacroix emphasized the necessity of establishing a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza as a top priority to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation in Gaza and is working towards addressing the grave risks posed by unexploded bombs to prevent further casualties and ensure the safe return of residents to their homes.
