Severe Winter Weather Claims 21 Lives in 6 US States
The United States has been hit by continuous snowfall and cold weather, resulting in a tragic increase in the number of deaths across 6 states. Since January 12, a total of 21 people have lost their lives in Tennessee, New York, Arkansas, Kansas, Oregon, and Mississippi due to the severe winter conditions.
According to reports from the Health Administration and local authorities, 7 deaths occurred in Tennessee, while an additional 14 people lost their lives in the other 5 states affected by the extreme weather.
In New York, specifically around the city of Buffalo near the Canadian border, meteorological services have recorded over 75 centimeters of snowfall, making travel by vehicle almost impossible. Additionally, wind speeds are expected to reach up to 65 kilometers per hour in certain areas, adding to the hazardous conditions.
Forecasters have also warned that the central parts of the country will experience dangerously low temperatures by Friday, increasing the risk of freezing.
The impacts of the severe weather have extended beyond human casualties. Over 1,090 flights were canceled in the USA, with an additional 4,221 flights experiencing delays. Nearly 95 thousand people in three states have been left without electricity due to winter conditions, as reported by the Poweroutages website which tracks power outage statistics in the country.
