Uzatom and Rosatom sign contract for Uzbekistan nuclear power plant

Rosatom, the Russian state corporation, is moving forward with plans to construct Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant, with the possibility of also offering proposals for low-capacity nuclear stations in the country. This development was announced by Denis Manturov, the head of Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The project, which is a collaboration between Rosatom and Uzatom, is currently in the works for the construction of the nuclear power plant. Manturov highlighted the extensive and complex nature of the project, emphasizing that Rosatom is prepared to provide Uzbekistan with additional proposals beyond the initial construction plans.

The chosen site for the nuclear power plant is located near Lake Tuzkan in the Jizzakh region, where engineering surveys have already been completed to confirm the suitability of the location for the plant. The technical configuration of the project has also been determined for optimal performance.

In addition to the construction phase, efforts are underway to address technical considerations such as integrating the nuclear power plant into the energy system, operating alongside renewable energy sources, reducing water consumption, and maximizing electricity production based on the site’s climate conditions. These aspects are being discussed with the Uzbekistani customer and international experts.

The agreement to build a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan was initially signed in September 2018 by Abdulla Aripov and Dmitry Medvedev, followed by a contract with JSC Atomstroyexport in May 2019 to conduct engineering surveys for the project’s technical development. The progress made so far indicates a significant step towards establishing nuclear energy capabilities in Uzbekistan.
