Uzbekistan and Russia to Streamline Migrant Work Permit Process

A delegation from Uzbekistan recently made a trip to Moscow with the goal of strengthening cooperation on labor migration and addressing the challenges faced by Uzbek workers in Russia. A key development from the visit was the decision to expedite discussions on allowing Uzbek citizens who plan to work in Russia to obtain their work permits in Uzbekistan.

Throughout their meetings with senior officials from various Russian ministries and agencies, including health, internal and foreign affairs, economic development, science and education, the Federal Labor and Employment Agency, and the Moscow city administration, both sides explored ways to improve employment opportunities and simplify migration processes.

As a result of the negotiations, several agreements were reached. The Russian side showed support for proposals to enhance the system for organized employment and professional training of Uzbek citizens seeking work in Russia. Additionally, discussions on transferring the process of issuing work permits to Uzbekistan were set to be expedited.

Both parties also agreed to continue their efforts to legalize the status of Uzbek citizens and create more favorable conditions for their temporary employment in Russia. The Federal Labor and Employment Agency is currently working on establishing a “single operator” system for the organized recruitment of foreign workers, while also considering offering preferential measures such as having employers cover work permit costs.

Another important topic of discussion was the need to combat false and biased information about labor migrants in the Russian media.

In addition to the official meetings, a forum was organized at the Uzbek Embassy in Moscow, which brought together major Russian employers. At the event, four agreements were signed to facilitate the employment of over 3,000 Uzbek citizens in Russia.

Overall, the visit of the Uzbek delegation to Moscow has paved the way for greater cooperation in the field of labor migration and has set the stage for positive developments in the near future.
