The Vatican Court of Appeals Reverses Acquittal of Priest Accused of Sexual Abuse
In a recent development reported by VaticanNews, the official publication of the Vatican, the Vatican Court of Appeals has overturned the acquittal of priest Gabriele Martinelli, who was accused of sexually abusing a child at a school affiliated with the Catholic Church in 2008-2009. The appeals court ruled that the 31-year-old priest was guilty of the charges.
This decision comes after Martinelli was initially acquitted in 2021 due to lack of evidence, but the case was reconsidered upon the objection of the party. The Vatican Court of Appeals has now sentenced Martinelli to 2 years and 6 months in prison and a fine of 1000 euros. However, the appeal court did not accept the compensation request of the abuse victim.
The case of another priest, Enrico Radice, who was accused and acquitted of aiding and abetting priest Martinelli in the first instance court, was also examined. Additionally, the Italian press reported that the Rome Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office made similar accusations against the two priests in question.
