Witnesses Testify in Ruben Vardanyan’s Trial
Court Hearings Continue for Ruben Vardanyan, Charged with Various Crimes in Azerbaijan
The trial of Ruben Vardanyan, an Armenian citizen facing multiple charges including torture, mercenary activity, violation of the laws and customs of warfare, terrorism, financing of terrorism, and other crimes under the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, continued on April 15. The hearings took place at the Baku Military Court and were presided over by Judge Zeynal Agayev, along with a panel of judges and defense attorneys representing the accused.
During the session, victims provided testimony about the injuries they suffered as a result of provocations by remnants of the Armenian Army and illegal Armenian Armed Groups. One victim, Elvin Mammadli, recounted how he was injured while evacuating a wounded soldier in an ambulance marked with a Red Crescent symbol, which was hit by an anti-tank rocket. Other victims testified about being wounded in various locations during military provocations initiated by the opposing side.
Public prosecutors questioned the victims about the circumstances of their injuries, with one victim emphasizing that the goal of the opposing side was to occupy the lands. All victims appealed to the court for the accused to receive the harshest punishment.
Forensic medical examination reports of the victims were also presented during the session. The trial is scheduled to continue on April 22, where Ruben Vardanyan will face charges under multiple articles of the Criminal Code, including planning a war of aggression, torture, terrorism, and illegal acquisition of weapons.
The ongoing trial highlights the seriousness of the crimes allegedly committed by Ruben Vardanyan and underscores the importance of holding individuals accountable for violations of international laws and customs during armed conflicts.
