Zorba Ballet Returns to the Stage after Five-Year Hiatus
The world-famous novel “Zorba the Greek” by Nikos Kazantzakis has once again been brought to life on the Opera Stage in a mesmerizing ballet performance. Titled “Zorba,” this adaptation features the enchanting music of Mikis Theodorakis and the creative libretto and choreography of Lorca Massine.
The ballet of Zorba tells a captivating story of characters from diverse backgrounds coming together through the universal languages of music and dance. It beautifully showcases themes of intercultural interaction, understanding, and the transformative power of love. Furthermore, it highlights the profound impact of dance in expressing and connecting human emotions.
Under the direction of conductor Sunay Muratov and with musical accompaniment by the ADOB orchestra and choir conducted by Ivan Pekhov, the talented cast brought the characters to life on stage. Eren Keleş portrayed Zorba, İlhan Durgut as John, Sultan Erol as Marina, David Khozashvili as Manolies, and Serapsu Yaşar as Madame Hortance. The performance also featured the exceptional soloist Ferda Yetişer.
The two-act ballet, featuring costume design by Tülay Şimşek, lighting design by Fuat Gök, and choreography by Almula Özlem and Elif Gözde Fırat, received thunderous applause from the audience in Ankara. The art lovers were moved by the emotional depth and stunning visuals of the performance.
Originally premiered in 1988 in Verona, Italy, “Zorba” has become a beloved addition to the world ballet repertoire. The Turkish audiences first experienced this exceptional work in 2010 through the Ankara State Opera and Ballet, with the last presentation in Ankara during the 2018-2019 art season.
The narrative of “Zorba” centers around an American named John who finds himself enamored by the Greek culture upon his arrival in a small town. As he falls in love with the beautiful widow Marina, he faces opposition from the villagers. It is the loyal friendship of Zorba that helps navigate the challenges faced by the two lovers. The story unfolds with dramatic twists and emotional turmoil, making it a timeless tale of love and sacrifice.
