February 29: A Quiet Day for Wedding Halls

Wedding halls remained empty on February 29

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), a total of 106,588 people got married in Istanbul in 2023. However, the calendar anomaly of February 29 had a significant impact on the city’s wedding industry.

While there was an increase in the number of marriage applications on special days such as “Valentine’s Day” or dates like “12.12.22”, the interest in February 29, known as the “leap year”, remained quite low. Couples in Istanbul who value their wedding anniversary celebrations did not choose this day for their special event.

Interestingly, none of the 39 districts in Istanbul, including Adalar, Ataşehir, Bağcılar, Bakırköy, Beykoz, Çatalca, Çekmeköy, Sarıyer, Sultangazi, Şile, Şişli, and Ümraniye, will have any weddings on February 29.

In some districts, only a few couples will be tying the knot, with one couple each in Avcılar and Kadıköy, two couples each in Büyükçekmece, Eyüpsultan, Silivri, and Maltepe, and so on.

The most weddings on February 29 will take place in Zeytinburnu and Esenyurt, with 14 and 20 couples respectively completing their wedding formalities. This marks a significant number compared to other districts in the city.

It seems that the leap year effect had a noticeable impact on the wedding industry in Istanbul this year, with couples choosing to avoid this unusual date for their special day.
