Hungarian EU Presidency to Focus on Future of Cohesion Policy
The Hungarian EU Presidency has kicked off with a focus on the future of cohesion policy, as highlighted by Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, Tibor Navracsics at the inaugural Cohesion Summit. The importance of cohesion policy within the European Union was underscored by Minister Navracsics, emphasizing its role in boosting competitiveness through enhanced societal and regional cohesion.
The Hungarian Presidency, set to begin on July 1, will prioritize discussions on EU cohesion policy, with informal meetings scheduled for September and formal sessions in November and December. Central to this policy is the promotion of convergence and support for less-developed regions to bridge the gap, as emphasized by Minister Navracsics.
Reflecting on the progress made over the past seven decades, Minister Navracsics noted significant developments in cohesion across member states, particularly in Hungary and neighboring regions since joining the EU. Hungary has shown progress in development rankings, surpassing older members like Greece and competing closely with countries such as Portugal.
With a strategic vision to rank among the EU’s top five livable countries by 2030, Hungary aims to prioritize rural population preservation and the creation of vibrant rural and urban areas. Despite overall convergence among member states, regional disparities persist, with Budapest experiencing substantial growth compared to regions like the Northern Great Plain and Southern Transdanubia.
Minister Navracsics also highlighted the role of capital cities in driving economic advancement in Central and Eastern European member states, acknowledging the widening north-south development gap in the EU. He identified specific regions in Hungary, such as Zalaegerszeg, Paks, and Békéscsaba, where targeted government intervention is necessary to address lagging development.
The Hungarian government has adopted a new regional development law, shifting towards greater regional cooperation for inclusive development. A comprehensive strategy has been outlined, focusing on three primary development zones to foster inclusive growth and narrow regional disparities within the EU. Hungary’s commitment to regional development and inclusive growth was emphasized by Minister Navracsics during the summit.
