Hungary’s Third Musical Road: A Look at the Debut with Video and Photos

Hungary has unveiled its third musical road, located along Route 21 between Hatvan and Lőrinci in Heves County. The 550-meter-long acoustic section was officially opened on 5 September, and now plays the hit song “Nélküled” (“Without You”) by the Hungarian band Ismerős Arcok as cars drive over it.

The project was carried out by HE-DO under the direction of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, as reported by Hungarian Builders. This musical road is part of a larger series of developments along different sections of Route 21.

With the addition of this third musical road, Hungary now boasts three such roads. Apart from the Route 21 section, there is also a musical road on Route 67 that plays Republic’s song “A 67-es út,” and another on Route 37 where drivers can hear the traditional Hungarian folk song “Érik a szőlő.”

Originally, the plan was to construct the third musical road in Nógrád County. However, after assessing multiple locations, it was decided that it would be too disruptive for nearby households.

To achieve the musical effect, the asphalt is specially grooved and painted to produce notes as cars pass over. The spacing of the grooves determines the pitch of the notes, while the clarity of the sound depends on the precision of the markings.

To experience the magic of Hungary’s newest musical road, check out some photos and a video of the construction and opening of this unique attraction.
