Iraq Establishes Military Bases on Turkish Border After 30 Years

In a recent development, Iraq has established two military bases near the Turkish border after a gap of 30 years. According to reports in the Iraqi press, the Iraqi Border Guards set up these bases in the Kishani village of Zakho district, close to the Turkish border.

Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk, the Ministry of National Defense Press and Public Relations Advisor, highlighted the Turkish Armed Forces’ ongoing efforts in the fight against terrorism during a press briefing. In response to inquiries about the Iraqi border troops setting up bases near Turkey’s operation areas, Ministry of National Defense (MSB) sources emphasized the cooperative efforts between Iraq and Turkey to combat the PKK terrorist organization and ensure border security.

Aktürk also revealed that 43 terrorists were neutralized in the past week as part of continuous operations aimed at eradicating terrorism. He mentioned that a total of 845 terrorists have been neutralized since the beginning of 2024, with a significant number located in Iraq and Syria.

Additionally, Rear Admiral Aktürk disclosed that approximately 50 thousand individuals were prevented from crossing the border illegally, with 364 individuals, including 9 terrorist organization members, being apprehended in the past week alone. Operations also resulted in the seizure of over 40 kilograms of methamphetamine.

The coordination between Iraq and Turkey in preventing terrorist activities, securing the border, and safeguarding the lives of civilians in the region remains a top priority.
