Israel’s Shooting of Gaza Aid Recipients Sparks UN Security Council Concern
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has issued a strong statement calling for all precautions to be taken to protect civilians and civilian structures in Gaza. The statement came in response to reports that Israeli forces were involved in a deadly incident in Gaza City, where more than 100 people were killed and several hundred others were wounded, including some with gunshot wounds.
The UNSC expressed deep concern over the incident and urged Israel to conduct a thorough investigation. The council also called on all parties in Gaza to comply with international law and ensure access to basic services and humanitarian aid for the civilian population.
The statement warned of dire consequences if humanitarian aid is not able to reach Gaza quickly and without hindrance, including a potential increase in food insecurity. The UNSC called on Israel to keep border crossings open for aid deliveries, facilitate the opening of additional crossings, and support the rapid and safe distribution of aid throughout the Gaza Strip.
Following the attack on Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza on February 29, where 116 people were killed and over 760 were injured, the government in Gaza accused Israel of a deliberate and planned assault. They stated that the Israeli army was aware that the individuals were there to receive aid, yet still carried out the attack, resulting in what they described as a cold-blooded massacre.
The international community has been closely monitoring the situation in Gaza and is calling for immediate action to ensure the protection and well-being of civilians in the region.
