Armenian Khachaturyan Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Khojaly Massacre
In a hearing at the Baku Yasamal District Court, Baku Military Court judge Zeynal Ağayev announced the court’s decision to sentence Armenian Khachaturyan to 15 years in prison. The decision comes in response to Khachaturyan’s involvement in the Meşeli massacre, where 27 Azerbaijanis were murdered on December 22, 1991.
Khachaturyan, who resides in Karabakh, was detained by Azerbaijani border guards at the Lachin border checkpoint while attempting to cross into Armenia under the guise of seeking medical treatment through the International Red Cross Committee on July 29. An arrest warrant had been issued in absentia for Khachaturyan in 2013 on charges of “genocide” and “forced displacement of the population” in Azerbaijan in connection to the Meşeli massacre.
The sentencing of Khachaturyan serves as a significant development in seeking justice for the victims of the Khojaly massacre and sending a strong message against such heinous acts. The court’s decision reflects the commitment to upholding the law and ensuring accountability for those responsible for grave atrocities.
