Mehmet II Opera to Premiere at AKM Tonight – Breaking News from Turkey
The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (İDOB) recently prepared all the decor and costumes for their latest production, “Mehmet II”, in their workshops. The opera, directed by Renato Bonajuto and conducted by Alessandro de Marchi, features a talented cast including Mert Süngü, Burak Bilgili, and İDOB Director Caner Akgün.
Speaking to a reporter from AA before the premiere, Akgün expressed his pride in utilizing local resources for the production, from carpentry to shoemaking. He emphasized the importance of introducing a voluminous opera to İDOB’s repertoire, showcasing the elegance of Fatih Sultan Mehmet to a diverse audience.
Director Renato Bonajuto praised the advanced technology of AKM Türk Telekom Opera Hall, which provided essential facilities such as a rotating stage and elevators for the intricate stage setup of “Mehmet II”. Alessandro de Marchi, the orchestra conductor, noted his enjoyment in working with the İDOB Orchestra and appreciated the attention to detail on the AKM stage.
Actor Mert Süngü highlighted the universal idea behind the opera, emphasizing the significance of Fatih Sultan Mehmet’s legacy beyond Turkey. Burak Bilgili, who portrays Mehmet II, discussed the historical context of the Euboea war and Rossini’s portrayal of Turkish characters with a heroic bass tone.
After its premiere on February 24, “Mehmet II” will be showcased at the Atatürk Cultural Center Türk Telekom Opera Hall on February 28, March 2, and March 6. The production features a talented ensemble, including Burak Bilgili and Doğukan Özkan as Mehmet II, Dilruba Bilgi and Gülbin Günay as Anna, and various other accomplished performers in key roles.
