Over 260 Million People Suffer from Asthma, Report Finds
Dr. Musa Topel, an Adult Immunology and Allergy Specialist, has raised concerns about the increasing prevalence of asthma worldwide. In a statement marking the “7 May World Asthma Day”, he highlighted that around 262 million people are affected by asthma, according to 2019 data.
Topel emphasized that asthma is a condition that can be controlled with medications, allowing patients to lead a normal life for many years. He explained that asthma typically progresses in attacks and can be triggered by various factors such as stress, infections, exercise, weather changes, pollution, smoke, and allergens.
Providing insights into the symptoms of asthma, Topel mentioned shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and sensitivities to certain odors. He stressed the importance of respiratory function tests for diagnosing asthma and monitoring the disease’s progression.
The specialist also highlighted the significance of collaboration between patients and doctors in managing asthma effectively. He underlined the need for patients to understand the implications of the disease and comply with medication regimens to ensure optimal outcomes.
In terms of preventive measures, Topel advised asthma patients to avoid allergens, pollutants, smoking, and obesity. He recommended getting vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcal diseases for individuals with underlying health conditions.
Discussing medication options, Topel mentioned bronchodilator inhalers, oral medications, and rescue drugs for managing asthma symptoms. He suggested that patients with frequent attacks should seek specialized care from pulmonologists or allergy specialists for advanced treatment options.
While asthma is reversible, Topel highlighted the importance of ongoing monitoring and treatment to prevent long-term damage to the airways.
