Rising Concern: Kyrgyzstan Records 58 Traffic Accidents Involving Electric Scooters

Electric Scooter Accidents on the Rise in Kyrgyzstan

November 3, 2023 – At least 58 traffic accidents involving electric scooters have been reported in Kyrgyzstan in the past nine months, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ulan Niyazbekov. Speaking at a board meeting, Niyazbekov expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents involving electric scooters.

Niyazbekov highlighted that despite the growing frequency of such incidents, little attention has been given to addressing the issue. He revealed that no electric scooter accidents were registered last year, but this year alone, there have been 58 cases resulting in 58 people injured. The majority of these accidents occurred in the capital city of Bishkek and the Issyk-Kul region.

In response to the rise in accidents, Member of Parliament Marlen Mamataliev has proposed stricter traffic rules for electric scooters. Mamataliev’s initiative aims to ensure road safety by implementing regulations, standards, and technical norms specifically for electric scooters.

If Mamataliev’s proposal receives support from fellow colleagues, the Cabinet of Ministers will be responsible for developing the necessary documents and guidelines to address the issue and enhance road safety.

These measures come as a response to the increasing popularity of electric scooters as a mode of transportation in Kyrgyzstan. With the growing number of electric scooters on the roads, it is crucial to establish rules and regulations to protect both scooter riders and other road users.

The government and relevant authorities must prioritize road safety and take proactive steps to prevent further accidents. This includes raising awareness about the potential risks associated with electric scooter usage and educating riders on safe practices.

In conclusion, the alarming increase in electric scooter accidents in Kyrgyzstan has prompted discussions on the importance of stricter regulations and safety measures. It is hoped that by implementing these measures, the country can ensure safer roads and protect the well-being of its citizens.
