Ukrainian President Zelensky meets Italian leaders on official trip

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy visited the Italian capital on February 24, 2022, for the first time since Russia’s war against Ukraine. During his visit, Zelenskiy met with Italian President Mattarella and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. President Mattarella reaffirmed Italy’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while the two leaders discussed various topics, including economic sanctions against Russia, fighting fake news across Europe, and the reconstruction of Ukraine. Zelenskiy also visited the Vatican City State to meet with Pope Francis.

However, extensive security measures were taken in Rome to protect Zelenskiy, with 1000 police personnel assigned, and Rome airspace closed to flights. Dozens of Ukrainians in Rome also showed their support for the heads of state by following Zelenskiy’s route through the city.

After completing his visit to Italy, Zelenskiy is expected to move on to Berlin, the capital of Germany.
