UN Emergency Coordinator Concerned about Potential Attack on Rafah

Martin Griffiths, the United Nations envoy to the Middle East, has spoken out regarding the ongoing attacks in Gaza by Israel. In a statement made to the British Sky News channel, Griffiths expressed the challenges they are facing in delivering aid to Gaza, particularly if the city of Rafah comes under attack and is closed off.
Griffiths emphasized the lack of safe spaces for the people of Gaza, stating that there is nowhere to evacuate them to that can be considered truly safe. He reiterated that it is the choice of those under attack where they will go and where they will not go, and that the UN will not be involved in the forced relocation of people.
The UN envoy described the situation in Gaza as the worst humanitarian crisis he has ever experienced, expressing deep concern over the possibility of an attack on Rafah.
When asked about Israel’s plan to eliminate Hamas and exclude them from future negotiations, Griffiths expressed skepticism, stating that it would be very difficult to dislodge such groups without a negotiated solution that includes their wishes. He also made it clear that Hamas is not deemed a terrorist organization by the UN, but rather a political movement.
Griffiths’ statements shed light on the grave situation in Gaza and the challenges faced by the UN in providing aid to the region. As the conflict continues, the international community will have to address the humanitarian crisis and work towards a negotiated solution to bring about peace and stability in the region.
