A retaining wall collapse in Kocamustafapaşa district causes damage to historical building’s garden
A retaining wall adjacent to a historical building in Kocamustafapaşa district, located on İzci Türk Street, collapsed, leading to damage in the garden of the building below. The incident prompted the dispatch of fire brigade, AFAD, and municipality teams to the region for assessment and potential rescue operations.
Ongoing investigations by the teams in the region reveal that parts of the structure, hidden between five buildings and not visible from the outside, had been showing signs of deterioration for a while.
Ayşe Yücel, whose garden suffered damage due to the collapsing retaining wall, expressed fear and frustration over the situation. Yücel mentioned that there were pre-existing cracks in the wall, which had been reported multiple times without any significant action taken. She recounted the response received from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, directing the issue to Fatih Municipality and ultimately the Governorship.
Yücel emphasized the continued risk of collapse, highlighting the potential danger posed by the building above the damaged wall. She expressed concern over the possibility of the entire structure collapsing onto the building below.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proactive maintenance and timely interventions to prevent such disasters from occurring. The authorities are urged to address the structural concerns promptly to ensure the safety of residents and buildings in the area.
