MP Fights Against Proposed 20 Soms Public Transport Fare Hike

Bishkek Deputy Opposes Fare Increase for Public Transportation

Bishkek Deputy Marlen Mamataliev has expressed his opposition to the proposed increase in transportation fares from 11 to 20 soms. He made this statement during a parliamentary session, highlighting the significant difference in average salaries between European countries and Kyrgyzstan.

Mamataliev pointed out that while the average salary in Europe is around 250,000 soms, in Kyrgyzstan it is only 25,000 soms. Therefore, he believes it is unfair to compare transportation fares in Kyrgyzstan to those in European countries. He argued that instead of raising fares, efforts should be focused on purchasing buses with electric motors or using gas as an alternative fuel source.

“If they insist on raising fares, it should be done modestly, perhaps to 15 soms. However, increasing it to 20 soms and even 25 soms during the night would be unjust,” Mamataliev stated.

The proposal to increase fares for public transportation up to 20 soms has been put forward by the Bishkek City Hall. The draft resolution, which suggests implementing a single tariff for all types of transport regardless of ownership (buses, minibuses, and trolleybuses), can be found on the City Hall’s official website.

The issue of fare increase has sparked a debate among lawmakers and citizens alike. Critics argue that such a significant rise in fares would burden the already financially strained population, while proponents argue that it is necessary to cover the rising costs of operation and maintenance.

The is surely going to be further discussion and debate surrounding this topic as the Bishkek City Council reviews the proposal and considers the interests of its citizens.
