Representation of Turkmenistan at the III Sub-Regional Seminar in Samarkand Orient

The III sub-regional seminar on national and sub-regional action programs for the cryosphere and climate change has started today, April 2nd, in the city of Samarkand. This seminar is part of the UNESCO project aimed at strengthening the resilience of Central Asian countries by promoting regional cooperation in assessing nival-glacial systems for integrated approaches to sustainable development and adaptation to climate change. Experts in cryosphere research, as well as scientists from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, have gathered for this event, with Turkmenistan being represented by specialists from the Ministries of Environmental Protection and Water Resources, along with university scientists.

Ms. Sara Noshadi, Head of the UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan, and Chinar Rustemova, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO Affairs, delivered welcoming remarks at the seminar, emphasizing the importance of enhancing resilience to climate change impacts. The first day of the seminar included sessions on launching a diagnostic analysis and developing the National and Strategic Action Plan, as well as an open dialogue among participants to exchange views on future project actions.

The main goal of this project is to enhance the adaptive capacity of Central Asian countries to climate change impacts on the cryosphere through assessment, regional cooperation, and stakeholder interaction. It aims to improve knowledge about glaciers, permafrost, and snow cover and their downstream impacts, provide stakeholders with comprehensive information for effective decision-making, and strengthen cooperation in cryosphere research and climate change monitoring.

The new UNESCO regional project in Central Asia plays a vital role in promoting cooperation, data exchange, and future development scenarios in cryosphere research and climate change monitoring. Tomorrow, April 3rd, the seminar will continue with sessions on "Ideas for Pilot Projects," where representatives will propose nationally agreed measures for implementing the UNESCO project.

This seminar marks an important step in addressing climate change challenges in Central Asia and fostering regional cooperation in sustainable development and adaptation efforts.
