US Under Secretary Fernandez to tour Oyu Tolgoi mine

US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, Jose W. Fernandez, is embarking on a visit to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 25-29 June to strengthen economic ties between the two nations. The main objective of the trip is to foster collaboration on various projects that will contribute to the advancement of Mongolia’s economic development and resilience. The focus areas of the collaboration include energy security, critical minerals, transportation, food security, intellectual property rights, and the digital economy.

During his stay in Ulaanbaatar, Under Secretary Fernandez will participate in the first-ever trilateral dialogue on critical minerals, along with the Governments of Mongolia and the Republic of Korea. This dialogue aims to deepen cooperation among the three countries and identify ways to promote high environmental, social, and governance standards in mining practices.

This year marks the 36th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Mongolia. The United States is proud to be regarded as Mongolia’s “third neighbor” and strategic partner. To expand this partnership further, Under Secretary Fernandez will engage in discussions with Minister of Foreign Affairs B.Battsetseg, Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry J.Gaanbaatar, as well as other government and private sector representatives. The focus of these discussions will be on joint efforts in the areas of economy, critical minerals, energy, and the environment.

During his visit, the Under Secretary will also meet with members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Mongolia and deliver a speech on international trade at the World Export Development Forum. He will have the opportunity to visit the Oyu Tolgoi mine and participate in cultural activities with the local community, including a friendly basketball game with the Mongolian women’s national 3×3 basketball team.

The visit of Under Secretary Fernandez is expected to deepen the economic ties between the United States and Mongolia and pave the way for further collaboration in various sectors.
