ZMO Conference Focuses on Water Efficiency in Agriculture

The Chamber of Agricultural Engineers (ZMO) recently organized a conference titled “Effective Use of Water in Agriculture” in Güzelyurt as part of the 179th anniversary celebrations of agricultural education.

The event, held at Güzelyurt Atatürk Cultural Center, began with a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem. Erkut Uluçam, President of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers, highlighted the significance of hosting the celebration in Güzelyurt, known as the agricultural hub.

Uluçam emphasized the need for efficient and strategic water management, especially in light of water resources coming from Turkey. Turgut Akçın, President of the Northern Cyprus Citrus Producers Association, addressed the challenges faced in citrus farming, stressing the importance of sustainable agricultural policies and responsible water usage.

Professors from various academic institutions, including NEU, CIU, and EUL, discussed the importance of agricultural education and the necessity for evidence-based approaches in farming practices. Seran Aysal, President of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Cypriot Engineers and Architects, underscored the significance of water projects from Turkey and advocated for proper urban planning to preserve agricultural lands.

Güzelyurt Mayor Mahmut Özçınar expressed the local government’s support for initiatives that promote agricultural development and productivity. He called for measures to safeguard arable lands and optimize water resources.

The conference concluded with a lecture on “Effective Use of Water in Agriculture” by Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ersoy Yıldırım from Ankara University. The event served as a platform for industry experts, academics, and policymakers to exchange ideas on sustainable agricultural practices and water conservation.
