Mayor of Istanbul Municipality Faces Indictment for Unexplained Increase in Assets
The Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigation Bureau has prepared an indictment against Ali Kılıç, the former mayor of Istanbul, regarding the extraordinary and unexplained increase in his assets during his time in office. The investigation also includes his relatives and their acquisition of assets.
According to the indictment, the Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate of Financial Crimes Branch Directorate has provided information on various allegations against Kılıç. These include the acquisition of properties in Ankara, Yalova, Tunceli, Istanbul, and Erzincan provinces, as well as involvement in various businesses such as construction, media agency office, foundation operations, hotel business, cleaning, and machine care through 3 companies.
The expert report highlighted that Kılıç did not submit 11 changes to the goods notification, as well as an income and expense comparison showing 5 million 155 thousand 41 pounds of expenses and an increase in assets. Kılıç’s lawyer also raised concerns regarding inaccuracies in the information provided to the prosecutor’s office, including discrepancies in property ownership and company information.
The indictment accuses Kılıç of committing the crime of “unjust property, goods kidnapping or concealment” and demands a sentence of 3 to 5 years in prison, as well as a heavy fine ranging from 5 to 10 million pounds. The case will be heard by the Criminal Court of First Instance in Maltepe.
