Uzbekistan’s Industrial Enterprises to be Relocated from Urban Centers
Uzbekistan Implements Ban on Environmentally Harmful Industrial Enterprises
Uzbekistan has announced its decision to prohibit the construction of environmentally harmful and energy-intensive industrial enterprises in its capital city of Tashkent, as well as in Nukus and other regional centers. This move comes as part of the implementation of the 2025 State Program under the “Uzbekistan – 2030” Strategy, with the aim of promoting sustainable development and protecting the environment. The Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy has been declared by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, highlighting the country’s commitment to addressing environmental issues.
Effective from May 1, new projects in Tashkent, Nukus, and regional centers that fall under the categories of being environmentally hazardous or energy-intensive will not be permitted. This ban applies to sectors such as asbestos and cement production, tanning and poultry factories, coal-burning facilities without advanced filtration systems, metallurgy plants, and waste processing facilities. The goal is to limit pollution in urban areas and promote a cleaner environment for all residents.
Furthermore, relevant ministries and agencies have been directed to propose plans for the gradual relocation of existing industrial facilities from the specified areas by October 1, 2025. This strategic step aims to align with Uzbekistan’s sustainability goals and reduce the negative impact of industrial activities on the environment.
In addition to the relocation of industrial enterprises, the presidential decree includes other environmental measures to be implemented by the end of 2025. These measures involve restrictions on the sale and usage of motor fuel that does not meet the Euro-4 emissions standard, as well as the prohibition of fuel oil in thermal and power generation facilities except in emergency situations approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Uzbekistan’s efforts to curb environmentally harmful industrial activities demonstrate its commitment to protecting the environment and promoting a sustainable future for its citizens. By prioritizing green initiatives and implementing strict regulations, the country aims to create a healthier and cleaner environment for all.
